Setting the Standard for Cataract Surgery in Southern Arizona

Cataract surgery is one of the most effective procedures in modern medicine—and a core area of expertise at Eye Associates of Tucson. Our surgeons combine decades of experience with advanced technology and a personalized approach to deliver exceptional outcomes.

We are recognized leaders in robotic-assisted laser cataract surgery, with our surgeons among the first in Southern Arizona to adopt this technology. Since 2012, our physicians have performed thousands of laser-assisted cataract procedures using advanced computer-guided systems designed to enhance precision and consistency.

Today, our doctors have performed more robotic cataract surgeries than any other group of physicians in Southern Arizona.

What are Cataracts?

Cataracts are a normal occurrence in an aging eye: your transparent lens begins to cloud over with the gradual buildup of naturally occurring proteins in the eye. Instead of allowing light to enter properly, the cloudy lens creates a foggy appearance to everything you see.

This process does not happen overnight. It typically progresses slowly, making it increasingly difficult to see things clearly and perform daily tasks. Common cataract symptoms include:

Hazy/blurry/cloudy vision
Glare and starbursts with night driving
Dull appearance of colors
Vision takes on a yellowish/brownish tint
Eye sensitivity in bright light
Double vision
Poor night vision
Needing frequent prescription changes

What to Expect During Cataract Surgery at Eye Associates of Tucson

Cataract surgery involves removing the clouded natural lens and replacing it with a clear intraocular lens (IOL) to restore your vision. At Eye Associates of Tucson, we offer both traditional and robotic cataract surgery with the state-of-the-art LensAR® system.

Robotic cataract surgery uses advanced imaging and computer guidance to assist the surgeon in performing critical steps of the procedure with exceptional accuracy. The LensAR® system creates a detailed 3-D map of your eye, allowing treatment to be customized to your unique anatomy. The surgeon remains in full control at all times—robotic technology enhances precision, but it does not replace surgical expertise.

We apply numbing eye drops before the procedure to ensure your comfort, and we provide a special eye shield and prescription eye drops to help your recovery go as quickly and smoothly as possible. Most patients enjoy clearer vision after just one to three days of healing!

See clearly again with Robotic Cataract Surgery

Experience cataract surgery reimagined with the LENSAR® Laser System, a femtosecond laser built exclusively for cataract procedures. With Augmented Reality™ 3D imaging, your surgeon sees every detail of your eye with extraordinary clarity, planning each step with precision that manual methods simply can't match.

Premium IOL Options

Intraocular Lenses (IOLs) are clear artificial lenses that replace the eye's natural lens during cataract surgery. Standard (monofocal) IOLs provide vision correction at one distance, while advanced technology IOLs can sharpen your vision across multiple distances, reducing your reliance on glasses and contacts. At Eye Associates of Tucson, we offer a wide selection of premium IOLs:

Multifocal/Trifocal IOLs

Multifocal IOLs are advanced technology IOLs that provide clear vision at multiple distances. They are made up of concentric rings of varying powers that your brain can shift between depending on the task at hand.

Eye Associates of Tucson is happy to offer the PanOptix® IOL, a trifocal lens that delivers crisp, clear vision at near, intermediate, and far distances. This is due, in part, to ENLIGHTEN® Optical Technology, a proprietary design that optimizes intermediate vision without compromising near and distance vision.

Extended Depth of Focus (EDOF) IOLs

Extended depth of focus (EDOF) IOLs are designed to provide visual clarity across a broad range of distances while significantly reducing disturbances, such as halos and glare. They are a good choice for patients with active lifestyles or who may not be suitable candidates for multifocal IOLs due to eye conditions such as macular degeneration or corneal disease.

This design stretches light rather than splitting it, resulting in fewer visual interruptions while maintaining optimal clarity.

Toric IOLs

Toric IOLs are specifically made for patients with astigmatism. Astigmatism is a common refractive error in which the cornea is shaped more like a football than the standard circular shape, distorting vision at multiple distances.

Toric IOLs are designed to work seamlessly with this shape, providing patients with clearer vision. Many multifocal and extended-depth-of-focus lenses also come in toric versions for patients seeking greater independence from visual aids.

During your pre-operative consultation, your eye doctor at Eye Associates of Tuscon can discuss the options available at our practice and help you determine the best IOL for your budget, vision needs, and goals.

What Our Patients Are Saying

“Dr. Bakewell performed my cataract surgery in 2008, and it has been a wonderful experience, with eye exams that still show 20/20 vision with no issues. I am thrilled to have him at Eye Associates to be able to have him attend to my vision needs.”
John P.
“My Cataract surgery experience with Dr. McCarty and her entire surgery team was flawless. The Cataract laser surgery itself was not scary or painful. The team kept me informed at each step of the way. It was actually quite fascinating. Lying calmly through the short procedure, you get a short, colorful, laser light show. I'm thrilled with the outcome on my 1st eye. It's been 35 years since I've had 20/20 vision. Thank You!”
Joan C.
“I went in to have a cataract consultation. I don’t believe that I have ever had such a thorough exam before. The doctor explained the procedure and was very reassuring. The entire staff was very friendly and professional. Highly recommend!”
